We enjoyed the High Shoals Cabins so much during our first visit in March this year that we went back for a second time during the last week of May. It's very secluded, private, and quiet. There are only 3 cabins nestled above the Ouachita River. They are spread out, so you still have plenty of privacy. The cabins are equipped with everything you could possibly need. There is a BBQ grill, fire pit and picnic table in each yard behind the cabins. The cabins are approximately 7 miles away from the main road. You wind through a thick forest all the way to the cabins. We were amazed at all of the fireflies lighting up the forest at night. There is a canoe available to paddle upstream, by taking a trail down to the river from the cabins. My husband, myself and our two boys (ages 10 and 12) enjoyed canoeing on the Ouachita River. Our reason for going to Mt. Ida was for crystal mining. I'll post reviews on the crystal mining sites, as well. It was a little too hot for us to go crystal mining in late May with the temperatures in the 90's. March was the perfect time when it was a little chilly. If you're looking for peace and quiet, but still need the comforts of home, I recommend High Shoals Cabins for your stay in Mt. Ida. We stayed in Cabin 3 in March, and in Cabin 1 this past visit. Both were great, but Cabin 3 is our favorite! In the mornings, you can sit on the front or back porch and listen (and watch) all of the birds, including woodpeckers. A few deer will run through the property and I think I saw a wild turkey one morning.
We stayed in cabin 4. It's an excellent deal for the cabin. Close to a few different Lake use areas. Myself and the family loved it. Will definitely go back againAlan was very quick to answer our questions.
We're headed back to High Shoals for our third consecutive summer!
Great place to relax, float or play in river, have a camp fire every night under the stars. I would definitely come back.
